First new gTLD deleted from the net

.doosan today became the first new gTLD to be removed from the domain name system.
It’s no longer showing up in the DNS root zone file, and IANA’s record lists it as “retired”.
.doosan was a dot-brand managed by Korean conglomerate Doosan Group. The company never did anything with it before deciding to kill the TLD off last September.
A month ago, ICANN used the pending deletion to test its Emergency Back-End Registry Operator safety net.
If memory serves, it’s the only gTLD to be ever be removed from the root zone, excluding test internationalized TLDs previously operated by ICANN.
ccTLDs are removed somewhat regularly, when international borders are redrawn.
That’s a dot brand domain, I wouldn’t necessarily call it a “new gTLD” domain (as in it’s not a generic).
Sounds as if they just didn’t do anything with it and didn’t want it, so it was a mutual decision to delete it?
It’s a new gTLD.
It was approved under the ICANN New gTLD Program.
IANA says it’s a “generic top level domain”:

They only had one domain, nic.doosan, so the loss isn’t big. 😛
And they only had nic.doosan so they could be in compliance with the agreement while assessing their options, including termination.
Would a company’s process of extricating itself from its own TLD be much more complicated had the TLD produced more SLD registrations?
Granted, a gTLD being sold commercially would be pulling the rug out from underneath consumers unless the transition went smoothly. But, I mean, for a dot Brand like .DOOSAN, would it make any difference if they’d had 100 active domains instead of just 1?
Never mind, I see what you’re saying. That they’d done the bare minimum. Not that having 1 domain made termination easier.
