.xxx reservations pass half a million

Kevin Murphy, March 24, 2011, 14:07:13 (UTC), Domain Registries

ICM Registry has now taken over 500,000 reservations for .xxx domain names.
The counter on its web site ticked up by about 150,000 overnight. This was apparently due to the bulk uploading of large requests from several dozen enthusiastic potential registrants.
ICM tells me that these are all requests for unique domains, not counting duplicates, and that over 100,000 requests were not added because they did not appear to come from legit sources.
The counter was around the 200,000 mark last Friday, before ICANN approved ICM’s .xxx registry contract. The deal generated substantial media interest.
Again, it’s worth noting that none of these reservations are guaranteed to convert into sales, they’re basically just requests to be notified when the domains become available.
The price of a .xxx domain is expected to be at least $70 a year, which could scare off some buyers.
Still, coupled with landrush and Founders Program sales, I’m fairly confident that ICM, which spent about $12 million fighting ICANN for .xxx, will recoup its investment before the end of the year.

We’re also taking .XXX pre-registrations (non-binding) although we’re only at the 4,200 mark. (https://www.uniteddomains.com/new-top-level-domain/xxx-domain-registration/) From everything I’ve read, it seems that the most interest in the domain is from domainers, rather than the groups that the domain was intended for.

There is an interesting article at MainStreet.com
entitled “Will .XXX Protect Our Children”.
    Part of the article reads:
“Regardless of the impact on the porn industry, it seems that the only way the new domain will make the Internet safer for kids is if all adult sites switched to sites ending in .xxx. Duke notes that Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) had drafted a bill that would have mandated such a migration back in 2006, when the proposal was initially being considered by ICANN; while the approval of the domain __once again raises the specter of such a mandate,_ she expressed uncertainty about whether such legislation would pass constitutional muster”
Give it time and “money”………I can see the politicians now wanting to pass a law that will line their pockets AND “protect our children.”
My point is, if you own a .com adult site, it may be a good idea to protect yourself .XXX
