The relaunch of Colombia’s .co country-code top-level domain, re-purposed for an international customer base, was the most significant TLD launch of 2010. The registry, .CO Internet, was widely praised for executing a solid launch marketing campaign that successfully persuaded users that it was trustworthy and responsible, as well as a good business opportunity. The namespace reached one million registered domain names within a year. In this .co case study, we explain some of the initiatives that enabled the company to achieve this result.

Sales of “premium” domain names will be an important source of early revenue for new gTLD registries, a way of quickly offsetting capital expenditures used for application fees, marketing and infrastructure. This article presents the top 1,000 reported domain name sales to date, and the top 1,000 sales in TLDs excluding .com. The full database of almost 60,000 domain name sales prices can be downloaded in CSV format.

Database of announced new gTLD applications

The vast majority of new gTLD applicants are not expected to announce their applications until after ICANN closes the first application round window on April 12, 2012. However, almost 200 gTLD possibly applications have been revealed by various individuals, organizations and companies since 2008. Many have since disappeared from public view. This database lists only those gTLDs that have passed a cursory check for the apparent seriousness of the relevant applicants.
