Donuts wins five more new gTLD auctions

Kevin Murphy, December 3, 2014, 23:58:30 (UTC), Domain Registries

Donuts added five new gTLDs to its ever-growing portfolio this week, as the results of five private auctions were revealed.
The company won the following strings:
.news — went to Donuts after withdrawals from Merchant Law Group, Amazon, Radix, Uniregistry, Famous Four Media and Primer Nivel. As somebody with a vested interest in the news media, I’m glad this one went to a registry with an open registration policy.
.golf — Donuts beat Famous Four, Dot Golf and Fegistry.
.casino — Donuts won after withdrawals from Famous Four, Afilias and dotBeauty.
.school — Donuts beat Fegistry, Uniregistry and Minds + Machines.
.football — Donuts beat Famous Four.
The registry currently has 156 delegated TLDs, more than half of those it originally applied for. It has another 99 active applications in various stages of pre-delegation.

These strings are bank. Congratulations Donuts Co. and thank you!

  2. BBarney says:

The public’s rejection of gtlds has become obvious. Isnt this really a case in which the losers technically won?

    “Wins”

I may be wrong, but it’s beginning to feel like Donuts is standing at a street corner buying $5 bills with $100 bills; you get to win against all trying to pay less than $5 don’tcha?
    I’m just saying…

  5. Tom G says:

So far 1million names sold at $20 per = $20,000,000. Not even 1 year into a $100million investment with more domains coming.
    I’d say “winning” is accurate
@BBarney Hard for the public to reject something they don’t know exists.
This train has barely pulled out of the station.

Many new gtlds are into vertical areas, for example .attorney, .gallery and the new gtlds discussions leading up to the proliferation were mentioning the vertical areas as the pros for them in the debate.
The big bang in new television channels proliferation which happened some years ago, insiders too were hoping to expand into ‘infomercial’ channels promoted by companies specialising in the same vertical areas, for example white goods. It has not happened much and is virtually nil in the UK television market.
This is the lesson the vertical new gtlds will have to learn, their market is not going expand and mature. The promotion by companies in the same vertical areas as the suffixes is not going to harvest.
It is going to be interesting if the new generic-sort gtlds are going to perceived as also vertical new gtlds.
Based on the comparison made with television channels, it is fair to predict that the new gtlds at least the vertical new gtlds are in the ‘B’ market not in the top ‘A’-market.
