GMO to apply for .osaka gTLD

Kevin Murphy, February 27, 2012, 16:57:09 (UTC), Domain Registries

GMO Registry has won governmental support for a .osaka new top-level domain bid for the Japanese prefecture of Osaka.
The company announced today that the prefecture awarded it the necessary letter of support after a tender process that ran in January.
Osaka is also the name of Japan’s third-largest city. The prefecture has a population of about 8.8 million.
The .osaka application joins GMO’s steadily growing collection of proposed Japanese geo-gTLDs. It already has governmental support for .tokyo, .okinawa and .ryukyu.
It also plans to apply for .shop off its own back.

    Hi Kevin,
Our company won governmental support for a .osaka new top-level domain as well!
The Osaka government did not want to evaluate the operators, and they decided to issue letter of support to 4 companies.
Also, local governments have not announced the results for .okinawa, .ryukyu, nor .kyoto bids yet.
The way GMO worded the press release is very confusing. It sounds like they won them all.

That’s weird. Is the Osaka gov expecting a kick back from the ICANN auction proceeds or what ??

    • Kevin Saimon says:

Osaka gov is not expecting any kick back from ICANN. It seems like they did not want to take the responsibility for selecting the winner due to having no time to fully evaluate the applicants before the New gTLD application window closes.
