Beckstrom quits ICANN

Kevin Murphy, August 16, 2011, 23:35:51 (UTC), Domain Policy

The CEO and president of ICANN has quit.
Rod Beckstrom tweeted within the last hour:

I have decided to wrap up my service at ICANN July 2012. Press release soon.

Many in the ICANN community kinda knew this was coming.
Over the coming hours, expect to read a lot of people question whether the words “I have decided” are strictly accurate.
UPDATE: I’ve covered the story in more depth for The Register.

  1. Acro says:

Why not effective immediately? A person who intends to quit is a liability for an organization for the remainder of their active duty. With all the recent heat that ICANN has been facing it’d be for the interest of the industry.

  2. M says:

Seriously Acro? Apparently you do not know Rod

  3. I’m with Acro. What the hell is up with resigning almost a year from now? Something doesn’t sound right! I’ve never heard of a year’s notice to quit a job!!!!!

    • Kevin Murphy says:

His predecessor, Paul Twomey, announced his resignation 10 months ahead of time, too. In practice, Beckstrom took over just four months later.
